Meta Ads case study

Meta Pixel & CAPI Using Stape & GTM

Ad blockers, iOS and browser privacy limits hide sales from Meta. I fix that with a Pixel + Conversions API setup through Google Tag Manager and a server container, so Meta sees every sale and your ads optimize on real data.

Context

Why the Meta Pixel alone is no longer enough

Meta's delivery system finds buyers by learning from the sales you report. When a sale never reaches Meta, it can't credit the ad that drove it or find more people like that buyer, and you still pay for the ad. These are the three numbers Meta grades your setup on — and every handover includes screenshots of them from Events Manager, so you can see the result for yourself.

  • Event Match Quality

0–10 score for how well Meta can link an event to a real person. Browser-only pixels often score 5–6; Purchase scored 9.0 and 9.2 in these accounts.

  • Event coverage

Share of pixel events also sent by CAPI. Meta's goal is 75%; both main accounts reached 100%.

  • Deduplication

Browser and server copies share one event ID, so each sale counts once. Both accounts “meet best practices”.

Method

How the setup works

  1. 1

    Your website

The shopper views, adds to cart, checks out and buys; the GTM web container captures each event once.

  2. 2

    Browser path: Meta Pixel

The Meta Pixel fires in the browser with an event ID for deduplication.

  3. 3

    Server path: Conversions API

Server-side GTM, hosted on Stape or Google Cloud, sends the same event with hashed customer details through the Conversions API.

  4. 4

    Meta Events Manager

Browser and server copies are deduplicated by event ID, with EMQ 9+. The same server setup can also feed Snapchat CAPI, TikTok Events API and GA4.

The challenge

A high-traffic store sending over 2 million page views a month relied on browser tracking. A share of purchases never reached Meta, so campaigns were optimizing on an incomplete picture of real sales.

What I did

  • Built Meta Pixel tags in the web GTM container and a Facebook CAPI tag in a server-side GTM container.
  • Sent hashed customer details with every event to raise match quality.
  • Matched event IDs so browser and server copies deduplicate cleanly.
  • Verified every event in Test Events: server “Processed”, browser “Deduplicated”.

Result

Purchase match quality of 9.0/10 and 100% CAPI coverage, with 151% more conversions reported than the pixel alone could see. Coverage, deduplication and data freshness all meet Meta's best practices, across 4.9K purchases and 2.2M page views in four weeks.

  • Meta Pixel via GTM
  • Conversions API
  • Server-side GTM
  • Event deduplication

The starting point

A UAE mobile-accessories store advertising on Meta and Snapchat needed both platforms to see every sale. Browser-only pixels were losing signals to ad blockers and iOS, weakening optimization on both.

What I did

  • Set up Meta Pixel and Snapchat Pixel tags in the web GTM container across the full funnel.
  • Built Facebook Conversions API and Snapchat Conversions API tags in a server-side container.
  • Sent hashed customer data for advanced matching and set up event ID deduplication.
  • Tested every event in Meta Test Events until all were processed and deduplicated.

Result

Purchase match quality of 9.2/10 with 100% CAPI coverage and real-time data. Deduplication meets Meta's best practices, and all five funnel events, from 15.2K page views to 445 purchases, are active.

The challenge

An online music-education store selling across Europe ran retargeting and lookalike campaigns. With strict EU privacy settings and heavy ad-blocker use among its audience, browser-only tracking was missing sales.

What I did

  • Built Meta Pixel tags in GTM for page view, view content, add to cart, checkout and purchase.
  • Set up a server-side GTM container on Stape with a Facebook Conversions API tag.
  • Kept the store's Pinterest and Reddit pixels and GA4 working alongside Meta.
  • Verified deduplication in Test Events and confirmed the Purchase event in GTM preview.

Result

55 purchases worth €1,913.90 tracked in the first 10 days of August, each one attributed to its campaign, with Purchase match quality rated “Great” by Meta and customer details sent on 100% of events.

Scope of work

  • Event deduplication
